Is this called Depression? Mommy Rut

28 Jan

I’m sitting on my bed late early evening in a total mommy rut. I’m in somewhat of comatose fatigued state, while I stare at the two-day old basket of clean clothes – in the background I can hear my 2-yr old playing her “gummy-bear” song while she enthusiastically (aka screaming at the top of her lungs) sings along with the tune – AND THEN…IT COMES OVER ME…I feel this awkward irritability, and want to scream or take a cold cold shower. I’m in a mommy rut; my days have become too predictable. Instead of laughing and enjoying the site of my 2-yr old and the peacefulness of my newborn asleep, I felt slightly depressed; what a shame.

Depression runs rampant in my immediate family up to my grandparents, aunts/uncles and even some cousins. That being said I have always tried to take care of my emotional and physical health; mostly making sure that I continue to have optimistic and positive outlook on life no matter what.

So I wanted to share with you exactly what I did to “SNAP” out of it and smell the roses.

1. Talk to somebody. I immediately talked to my hubby and asked if he ever felt that way, and he calmly said “sure” and told me what he does to feel relief, from exercising to reading. This made me feel NORMAL and so RELIEVED. And it dawned on me that I haven’t exercised in over 3 days…no wonder I was feeling this way.

2. Take a B12. Adequate amounts of B12 is necessary for a healthy nervous system. I went downstairs popped one in my mouth and felt some energy come back. I also have anemia so b12 helps quite a bit.

3. Take a Shower. Relaxation and Deep Breathings helps calm the mind & body. Practicing yoga and meditation, has taught me different techniques; so while I was in the shower I inhaled my good energy and exhaled negative energy.

4. Eat some carbs! Its is known in the health community that carbs help boosts serotonin levels which are the “feel good” hormone. But make sure to eat the good carbs! Here is a great article to ready: Good Carbs . So for me I am eating a slice of banana w/ unsweetened peanut butter and some popcorn.

5. Smile and LAUGH. Watching a funny tv show or movie can do wonder, so I am going to put the kids to sleep and grab a nice laugh with my hubby in my arms.

I AM ALREADY FEELING MUCH BETTER. Thanks for letting me share.

Here is another article from Parent magazine that I read in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet, right before jumping into the shower (hey, don’t laugh, its the only place in the house where I can get some quiet time)…

How to Break Out of Your Mommy Rut.

I have those moments too…. I think we all do… I notice what helps me is a brat pack movie and someone to watch it with. Nothing like The Breakfast Club to make me see that it could be worse, I could wake up in 1990 spending my Saturday in detention minus the sexy boys that adore me…
